Bug-Out Bags

How Heavy Should Your Bug-Out Bag Be?

The most common bug-out bag mistake is packing too much. Here's how to find the right weight for your situation.

Person weighing a backpack on a scale

A bag that's too heavy to carry comfortably for a mile has failed at its primary function. The weight question is one of the most important to answer before you start packing.

General guideline: your loaded bag should be no more than 15–20% of your body weight. For a 150-pound adult, that's 22–30 pounds including water.
