Emergency Water Sources Already in Your Home

Before any disaster, your home already contains more clean water than most people realize. Here's where to find it.

Water heater and pipes in a home utility room

If you run out of stored water during an emergency, your home contains several additional sources that most people don't think about. Knowing them in advance could matter.

The water heater alone typically holds 40–60 gallons. The toilet tank (not bowl) contains clean water. Pipes in your walls hold a small supply that can be drained.
