Understanding Air Quality During Wildfires

Air quality during a wildfire event can be dangerous even far from the fire. Here's how to read AQI and protect your household.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) measures how polluted the air is. During wildfire events, AQI can spike to hazardous levels (200+) in areas far from the actual fire.

At AQI 150+, outdoor activity should be minimized for everyone. At 200+, staying indoors with windows closed is important even for healthy adults. Sensitive groups — children, elderly, people with respiratory conditions — should take precautions at lower AQI levels.
