Heating system serviced and filters replaced

Chimney inspected if wood-burning fireplace in use

Pipe insulation checked (especially exterior walls)

Carbon monoxide detector tested and battery fresh

Know location of water main shutoff

Snow shovels and ice melt accessible

Water stored (1.5 gallons per person per day, pipes may freeze)

NOAA weather radio

During a Winter Outage

Monitor home temperature (below 55°F becomes a concern; below 50°F is dangerous for vulnerable individuals)

Keep interior doors closed to conserve heat in smaller space

Dress in warm layers; cover head and feet first

Never use a gas stove, oven, or charcoal grill for heating

Never use a generator, camp stove, or propane heater indoors without proper ventilation (CO risk)

Pipe Safety

Drip faucets slightly during prolonged below-freezing temperatures

Know how to shut off water main if a pipe bursts

Know signs of frozen pipes (reduced or no water flow)

Never use a torch or open flame to thaw pipes

Vulnerable Household Members

Check on elderly neighbors and family members daily

Know signs of hypothermia: shivering, confusion, slurred speech, drowsiness

Children lose heat faster — ensure they are adequately covered

Medical equipment (CPAP, oxygen) — have backup power plan
